The Premier’s Awards for Excellence in Education will not be running for the 2024/2025 school year.
Due to the upcoming provincial election, the Ministry of Education and Child Care is revisiting the cycle and format of the awards and exploring the option of combining them with the ChildCareBC Awards of Excellence.
The efforts and accomplishments of teachers, administrators and support staff in the 2023/24 and 2024/25 school year can still be considered as part of the next awards ceremony, likely to be in the fall of 2025.
More information about the next awards cycle will be shared once finalized.
The Premier’s Awards for Excellence in Education were created to recognize the exceptional contributions of B.C.'s teachers, administrators and support staff that are vital to the cultural, economic and social well-being of the province. The Premier’s Awards for Excellence in Education provide students, parents, teachers and other members of the community with an opportunity to celebrate those who make a real difference in B.C. schools.
In 2023, three award recipients were chosen for each of the ten categories below. Each recipient received a taxable personal bursary for professional learning and a contribution to their school community for professional learning.
Categories for the Premier's Awards for Excellence in Education
Eligibility
Nominee must hold a valid B.C. teaching certificate
Criteria
The nominee:
- Has increased students’ understanding of good citizenship by integrating school and community involvement within the classroom.
- Through innovative and meaningful ways, has improved community life by linking students, parents and the community or sought opportunities to address community issues within the classroom.
- Has coordinated community services to be accessible to students and their families.
- Actively participates in their community.
Eligibility
District educational leaders who hold a valid B.C. teaching certificate
Criteria
The nominee:
- Is known as a visionary leader who models integrity, passion and courage in a time of change.
- Has created and encouraged an environment that nurtures innovation and equity across the system.
- Has created a strong culture with a clear, collaborative vision and an ability to develop sustainable action plans that deliver on high expectations for student success and learning.
- Uses available data and creates measurement tools to evaluate district needs and ensures that evidence-based, collaborative decisions are made to support those needs.
- Has built distributed leadership, and collaborative district, school and community support networks that created an inclusive, trusting environment focused on success for all.
Extracurricular Leadership
Eligibility
Nominee must hold a valid B.C. teaching certificate
Criteria
Through participation in extra-curricular activities and/or sponsoring of student activities, the nominee has:
- Fostered a positive learning environment where students have continued to learn and develop a variety of skills and abilities outside of the regular classroom.
- Provided a safe, inclusive and encouraging learning environment.
- Developed connections for students that translated to the classroom experience and facilitated a positive experience for the students, school and community.
Eligibility
Nominee must hold a valid B.C. teaching certificate
Criteria
The nominee has:
- Promoted Indigenous languages, cultures, histories and reconciliation within the classroom, school and community.
- Created an approach to Indigenous education by encouraging students to become active participants in traditional teachings. Such practices include Indigenous languages and oral histories.
- Created respectful relationships between local Indigenous communities and schools to increase meaningful involvement and understanding.
- Increased Indigenous voices in the education system.
Eligibility
Nominee must hold a valid B.C. teaching certificate, with no more than 5 years of teaching experience. At least three of those years of experience must have been in B.C.
Criteria
In their initial years of service the nominee has:
- Fostered the intellectual, social and physical growth of students.
- Used innovative methods to create an exciting and engaging learning environment for individual students or a group of students.
- Focused on developing the educated citizen throughout their instruction.
- Encouraged students to achieve their best and recognized student success.
- Demonstrated a personal commitment to lifelong learning.
Outstanding Support – School Community
Eligibility
Support Staff (i.e. bus drivers, crossing guards, student supervisors, Indigenous cultural facilitators, custodians, maintenance/trades, and clerical)
*This category is intended for those individuals who provide support in a broader school setting rather than within a classroom
Criteria
The nominee has:
- Contributed to a healthy, safe and productive school community by creating inclusive, connected and engaging experiences for students, parents and the community.
- Created an exciting and engaging environment for individual students or a group of students through innovative techniques.
- Built strong collaborative relationships with other education professionals to support a student or group of students, in the school or community.
- Supported students in their intellectual, human and social, or career development through individualized support and encouragement.
Outstanding Support – Teaching Assistant
Eligibility
Educational Assistants (including Indigenous Education Support Workers and Indigenous Youth Workers) who provide support within a classroom setting.
Criteria
The nominee has:
- Contributed to a healthy, safe and productive school community by creating inclusive, connected and engaging experiences for students, parents and the community.
- Created an exciting and engaging environment for individual students or a group of students through innovative techniques in the classroom.
- Built strong collaborative relationships with other education professionals to support a student or group of students, in the school or community.
- Supported students in their intellectual, human and social, or career development through individualized support and encouragement.
Outstanding Team Collaboration
Eligibility
At least one of the nominees must hold a valid B.C. teaching certificate
Criteria
- The team consists of no more than 3 members.
- Team members have collaborated on an exceptional initiative that has positively impacted student learning.
- The success of the initiative is a result of a true collaboration among team members, not simply a collection of individual accomplishments.
- The initiative addresses student needs.
- The endeavors undertaken go above and beyond regular work or involve innovative approaches to curricular programming.
Eligibility
School-based leaders who hold a valid B.C. teaching certificate
Criteria
The nominee:
- Through innovative leadership, has gone beyond surface level change at the school level to significantly improve student success and achievement.
- Has created a strong school culture with a clear vision, based on inclusivity and positive learning conditions that have led to high expectations for student success.
- Uses available data and creates measurement tools to evaluate student needs and ensures that evidence-based, collaborative decisions are made to support those needs.
- Has built collaborative teaching, school and community support networks that create an inclusive, trusting environment focused on success for all.
Social Equity and Diversity
Eligibility
Nominee must hold a valid B.C. teaching certificate
Criteria
The nominee has:
- Provided experiential learning opportunities for students (related to curricular outcomes) to build understanding of the diverse society we live in and assessed the students on demonstrating the importance of treating all with dignity and compassion.
- Developed in students a sense of social responsibility, and tolerance and respect for the ideas and beliefs of others.
- Engaged students beyond the classroom on complex social or environmental issues such as racism, environmental stewardship and poverty.
- Supported students to take action that results in positive, sustainable change within their community.
