A Canadian National (CN) Railway lumber train derailment occurred on the CN Squamish Subdivision north of Pemberton yesterday (July 11, 2018). An initial report from CN Rail stated one full pulp car was in Gates Lake but has not released any of its contents into the lake. A second full pulp rail car is partially in the lake as well and also has not breached. There is no reported pollution at this time.
An Environmental Emergency Response Officer (EERO) with BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy is overseeing this incident to ensure appropriate actions are taken to safely remove both train cars. Hemmera Environmental consultancy and Nucor Environmental are also responding to the derailment.
Containment boom was set up around the submerged train car yesterday evening as a precautionary measure.
No further updates are expected unless the situation worsens.
