July 31, 2017 - 5:00 pm
A motor vehicle incident involving a tanker truck occurred earlier today, resulting in a diesel fuel spill. The spilled fuel has entered the municipal storm drain which leads to Millstream Creek.
RCMP and the City of Langford Fire Department responded to the accident scene. The City of Langford Engineering Department and B.C. Ministry of Environment investigated the storm drain and Millstream Creek. It was confirmed that the spilled fuel entered Millstream Creek.
The City of Langford has deployed absorbent boom in the creek to confine the product. A hydro-vac truck is also working near Millstream Creek to remove product from the storm drain before it reaches the creek.
Due to the salmon spawning areas nearby, the B.C. Environmental Emergency Response Officer (EERO) onsite is working with Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation (MIRR) Critical Incidents Team to connect with the Malahat First Nations, Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations, and the WSANEC First Nations (Tseycum, Tsawout, Tsartlip, and Pauquachin).
No further updates are expected unless the situation deteriorates.
