The accident site was cleaned up late yesterday. Environmental consultants have been contracted to sample the area and remove any contaminated material if necessary. Ministry of Environmental and Climate Change Strategy (ENV) staff will continue to monitor the incident as it resolves. No additional updates are anticipated.

It was confirmed that the fuel tanker was carrying gasoline. A Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy (ENV) response officer remained on scene throughout the day and will return tomorrow morning. Highway 97 remains closed overnight, updates on road closures can be found at: DriveBC.

A fuel tanker carrying gasoline was involved in an accident with a single vehicle resulting in the fuel tanker catching fire approximately 24 km south of Fort St John on Hwy 97. A Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy (ENV) response officer, local fire department, RCMP, and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) have arrived on scene. The tanker truck has been extinguished, however product has migrated under the highway into a culvert where it is still burning. Product has also entered a small nearby frozen creek where it appears to be contained. The highway is currently shutdown and a detour has been established to shuttle traffic around the site.
