Coldstream - Vernon

Project Description and Location: This project is a Sensitive Ecosystems Inventory (SEI) theme based on Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping (TEM) and includes wildlife habitat assessments.The study area is the Coldstream - Vernon area of the north Okanagan, at the north end of Kalamalka Lake.

Project partners: The Ministry of Environment initiated this project with funding from the Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia, the B.C. Ministry of Environment, the City of Vernon, the District of Coldstream, the Regional District of the North Okanagan, the Greater Vernon Services Commission, and the Canadian Wildlife Service (Environment Canada).

Project objectives: The Coldstream - Vernon SEI was initiated in 2005 to provide inventory information on rare and fragile ecosystems that can be used for ecologically sustainable land use and development planning. Wildlife habitat ratings were developed for the following species: Great Basin Spadefoot, Grasshopper Sparrow, Long-billed Curlew, Swainsons Hawk, Western Screech Owl, Yellow-breasted Chat, Badger, Painted Turtle, Northern Pacific Rattlesnake and Gopher Snake.

Standards and scale used: The project follows Standard for Mapping Terrestrial Ecosystems in B.C. 1998 and Standard for Mapping Ecosystems at Risk in B.C. 2006. The mapping was completed in 2007 at 1:20,000 scale.
