City of Kelowna

Project Description and Location: This project presents a Sensitive Ecosystems Inventory (SEI) theme based on Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping (TEM). Terrain, terrain stability, and soil erosion potential mapping were also completed.The project includes new ecosystem mapping for the majority of the City of Kelowna, updated mapping for the South Slopes area along the southern edge of the city and adjacent lands in the Regional District of the Central Okanagan.

Project objectives: The City of Kelowna SEI was initiated in 2007 to provide inventory information on remaining rare and fragile ecosystems that can be used for ecologically sustainable land use and development planning. These natural areas are a vital portion of the north – south corridor in the Okanagan Valley that is facing rural and urban development pressures.

Project Partners: The project was funded by The Real Estate Foundation of BC, the BC Ministry of Environment and the City of Kelowna.

Standards and scale used: The project follows the Standard for Mapping Terrestrial Ecosystems in B.C. 1998 with a survey intensity of five and the Standard for Mapping Ecosystems at Risk in BC. 2006. Field inventory was completed in 2007. Mapping was completed at 1:20 000 scale.
