Publications – Nicholas Ukrainetz

Last updated on December 1, 2023

Nicholas has worked for the Ministry since 2006 with the provincial Forest Genetics group and has been the lodgepole pine breeder since 2010. He also manages the western white pine breeding program and supports conservation efforts for whitebark pine.

Nicholas is particularly interested in breeding for resistance to forest pathogens while maintaining gain in volume achieved through the breeding program.

Position Title: Research Scientist, Tree Breeder

Contact: B.C. Government Directory

Current research projects

  • Screening for resistance in western white pine against white pine blister rust
  • Selecting lodgepole pine trees resistant to western gall rust, comandra blister rust and dothistroma
  • Support the screening of whitebark pine seedlings for resistance to white pine blister rust
  • Landscape-level genetic diversity for resilient future forests – GeneSolve Project
  • TRIA-FoR: Transformative risk assessment and forest resilience using genomic tools for the mountain pine beetle outbreak
