Western redcedar preliminary genetic tests

Last updated on August 31, 2023

Project number: EP 1012.02

District: Selkirk Forest District

Objective

To determine the extent and pattern of genetic variability in western redcedar between populations and families within populations. Past biochemical tests indicated little, if any, genetic variation in redcedar. These are preliminary tests to determine if there is any genetic variation for redcedar in growth and adaptability.

Treatment

Ten populations of western redcedar approximating the geographic limits of redcedar's natural range in B.C., and including northern California. Each population is represented by 3 open-pollinated families.

Layout

Randomized complete block with 12 blocks. Noncontiguous, interlocking replications with 2 replications per family per block.
