The Adaptability of Tree Species to Forest Sites (EP 368)

Last updated on January 8, 2024

On this page:

Objectives

  1. To compare the relative performance of seven tree species: Douglas-fir (Fd), western hemlock (Hw), western redcedar (Cw), amabilis fir (Ba), grand fir (Bg), Port Orford cedar (Pc), and Sitka spruce (Ss)
  2. This area has also been used for studies of ecological site classification, stand structure, understorey relationships, tree growth, growth form and comparisons with surrounding vegetation

Treatments

The experiment established in 1958 near Ucuelet and tested seven species: Douglas-fir, western hemlock, western redcedar, amabilis fir, grand fir, Port Orford cedar, Sitka spruce. The seven species were replicated 7 times with each plot (replicate) containing 49 trees planted in rows 7x7 at an approximate 2.5m square spacing (1700 stems/ha). The 49 plots are in blocks of 42, 4, and 3 because it was difficult to obtain a single block of land sufficiently uniform enough to accommodate all 49 plots. This was not intended to be a long-term experiment and there are no buffers.
