Conservation officer

BC Public Service conservation officers provide conservation service including environmental law protection and enforcement, problem wildlife control and international environmental treaty enforcement.

Duties may include patrolling natural areas to ensure their conservation and protection.

Conservation officers enforce environmental legislation, including issuing tickets and subpoenas.

Positions allocated to the conservation officer series have continuing responsibility for one or more of the following duties:

• Conducting investigations into suspected non-compliance with environmental and conservation related legislation and evaluating information and complaints received from various sources
• Obtaining and securing evidence related to environmental law enforcement
• Exercising statutory authorities to make arrests, seize equipment, issue tickets, issue stop work orders and recommend prosecution, penalties or cancellation of permits while carrying out environmental enforcement activities
• Conducting patrols, by vehicle, ATV, boat, aircraft, horseback or on foot to discover violations or evidence of violations
• Evaluating, recommending and participating in covert or undercover field investigations of major offenses to ensure environmental legislation is protected
• Conducting and administering the provision of extraordinary problem wildlife control services including evaluating public complaints about problem wildlife and expediting appropriate action
• Informing and educating the public on ways to reduce conflicts between humans and wildlife
• Training, supervising and overseeing other conservation officers in carrying out any of the above duties
