The Coroners Service of British Columbia is responsible for investigating all unnatural, sudden and unexpected, unexplained or unattended deaths in the province. It makes recommendations to improve public safety and prevent death in similar circumstances.
Community coroners are appointed by the Chief Coroner under Section 55 of the Coroners Act. The Public Service Act does not apply to community coroners. A person retained to act as a community coroner works "as and when required" and is remunerated at a rate of $32.32 per hour in return for exercising powers and performing duties and functions as a coroner under the Act.*
Employees appointed as coroners under Section 54 of the Coroners Act are covered by the Public Service Act and are classified using the Management Classification and Compensation Framework.
* The hourly rate for the classification was increased from $25, effective June 9, 2016.
