Death in the workplace

If a death occurs in the workplace

  1. Make sure the scene is not disturbed except to attend to the victim and any other injured parties
  2. Make sure all staff, public citizens or anyone else in the workplace is safe
  3. Evacuate the site if necessary
  4. Call 911 to notify the police or RCMP
  5. Call the Occupational Safety and Health Emergency line: 250-952-0911

Death of a BC Public Service employee

If the deceased was a BC Public Service employee, contact:

  1. WorkSafeBC Prevention Emergency line: 1-888-621-7233 to report  the worker fatality.  You will be asked for you name, ministry , physical address and details of the incident
  2. AskMyHR: 1-877-277-0772 or submit an AskMyHR (IDIR restricted) service request using the categories Myself (or) My Team or Organization > Leaving the Public Service > Death of an Employee
  3. The program area director
  4. Occupational Safety and Health Emergency line: 250-952-0911 

WorksafeBC requirement

If a fatality occurs in the workplace, complete a submission via the Safety Incident Reporting Portal (Form 7).
