Data-related legislation

The Anti-Racism Data Act and Statistics Act prescribe how we collect, use, and share data. Other laws, like the Information Management Act and Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act also apply to data.

Some standards, like the Gender and Sex Data Standard or Core Metadata Standard, are not part of these laws but still follow established information management and technology standards and guidelines under the Core Policy and Procedures Manual.

Anti-Racism Data Act

The Anti-Racism Data Act enables us to collect and use data to address systemic racism in government services.

The Government of B.C. is taking action to address systemic racism in provincial programs and services. Visit antiracism.gov.bc.ca to find out more.

Statistics Act

The Statistics Act ensures that information that the government collects is kept confidential and only used for statistical purposes.
