Choosing a business name is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when starting your business.
When picking a name for your business, it's smart to have a few options in mind in case the business name you want may already be taken. To check, you can look online in Orgbook BC, in phone books, business lists and other publications to see if a similar name is already in use.
When choosing a business name, it should have two parts: one that makes it stand out (like "ABC") called a “distinctive element” and another that tells people what your business does (like "Landscaping") called a “descriptive element”. Please note: if you decide to incorporate your business (known as a corporation), you’ll need to add a corporate designation such as “Ltd.” or “Inc.” – which specific designation to add to your business is a personal choice.
If you want to use a business name that is anything other than your personal name, you will need to have your business name approved by submitting a name request through Name Request Online. You can pay online by using a credit card (VISA, Mastercard, or American Express).
Alternatively, you can download the Name Request form and take it to your nearest Service BC Centre.
Payment Options:
Service BC Centre: Credit Card or Debit Card
BC Registry Services: Cheque (made out to Ministry of Finance)
PO Box 9431 Stn Prov Govt Victoria BC V8W 9V3
Once your business name is approved, it will be reserved for 56 calendar days. Within this window, you must register your business with BC Registry Services.
PROTECTING YOUR BUSINESS NAME
The names of sole proprietorships and general partnerships are not protected by law, which means someone else could decide to use the same name. Only incorporated businesses have that protection. If protecting your business name is important to you, you may want to incorporate your business.
Distinctive Element - This is the part of the business name that makes it unique. It differentiates the business from others in the same industry. It's usually a word or phrase that is catchy or stands out in some way.
Descriptive Element - This is the part of the business name that describes what the business does or the industry it operates in. It tells customers about the nature of the business.
