Employment standards

Last updated on June 1, 2024

The law in B.C. sets standards for payment, compensation and working conditions in most workplaces. The standards promote open communication, fair treatment and work-life balance for employees.

Not every work issue or type of work is related to B.C. employment standards. See if the standards apply to you.

Taking time off

There are different reasons employees are allowed to take time away from work.

Quit, fired or laid off

Employment is terminated when an employee quits or is fired.

Hiring employees

Employers decide how to advertise a job and hire employees.

Getting paid for work

Employees are paid at least twice a month. They must be paid at least minimum wage.

Hours of work and overtime

Standard work hours are eight hours a day and 40 hours per week.

Statutory holidays

Employees get paid for statutory holidays if they qualify.

Temporary foreign workers

Foreign workers in B.C. are protected from unfair practices.

Licensing

Farm labour contractors, employment and talent agencies must be licensed.

Specific industries

Some industries or types of workers are subject to specific requirements.
