Together for Wildlife - Goal 4

Accountability and transparency build trust and confidence

We will create a robust and transparent system for reporting our actions, measures of success, and plans for future investments.

Our success depends on making sure we are on the right path, which means assessing whether we are delivering the actions identified in the strategy and whether the impacts of these actions benefit wildlife.

This approach requires a robust and transparent system for reporting our actions, measures of success, and plans for future investments.

We commit to the following Actions 14-17 to achieve Goal 4

Action 14 - Report out on performance

We will implement a robust performance management framework with goals, actions and performance measures to monitor and report publicly on the success of the Together for Wildlife strategy to all British Columbians.

Work completed and underway

  • Drafted performance measures for the Together for Wildlife strategy as a blueprint to increase transparency and keep the public informed
  • Work across ministries and with external partners to finalize performance reporting
  • Launched the Together for Wildlife dashboard
  • Continue to track and report out on wildlife and habitat investments

Action 15 - Share financial reports

We will produce annual financial reports that document all expenditures made to deliver the strategy, and we will share these reports with all British Columbians.

Work completed and underway

  • Track and report annually on Together for Wildlife investments
  • Created the Together for Wildlife dashboard to allow for dynamic reporting
  • Continue to publicly report out on expenditures by action to help measure success and ensure transparency through the Together for Wildlife website and dashboard

Action 16 - Communicate decision rationales

We will document and share with all British Columbians the rationale for significant decisions related to wildlife stewardship and how evidence was used to inform decisions. We will develop an approach for publicly reporting on significant decisions, and we will implement this approach over the life of the strategy.

Work completed and underway

  • Shared decision rationales with First Nations and other interested parties on how decisions were made for several controversial wildlife issues
  • Compiled templates and approaches used in other jurisdictions to communicate how wildlife decisions are made
  • Developed a draft approach and procedures for decision rationale to support wildlife and habitat management
  • Review recent decisions about wildlife stewardship, how those decisions were made, and begin sharing that information with all British Columbians

Action 17 - Periodically review and update the strategy

The Together for Wildlife strategy was launched in 2020 to improve wildlife and habitat stewardship across B.C. The vision is to make sure wildlife and their habitats thrive, are resilient, and support and enrich the lives of all British Columbians. From the beginning, we made a commitment to review the strategy as a way to measure success and make any changes that might be needed based on what we learned.

In 2025, we will complete a comprehensive review of the strategy and revise it appropriately based on the knowledge gained.

Work completed and underway

  • Begin internal review of strategy implementation to date
