Local government drought management

Drought conditions can affect communities in many different ways, such as reducing water availability for domestic and non-domestic use. Local governments can support drought management through data collection, program and information delivery, emergency response and other tools and strategies.

Drought response planning

The Ministry of Environment has developed a comprehensive plan for drought response in B.C., which includes actions taken preceding, during and immediately following a hydrological drought to reduce its impacts. Section 2.2 of the plan details the regional level response that local governments can take in managing drought.

Local governments lead the initial response to emergencies in their communities. This response includes emergency plans or programs, which local governments must authorize and empower through bylaws or resolutions.
