In 2014, the B.C. government announced funding of $1 million to support the legacy projects recommended in the Chinese Historical Wrongs Final Report (PDF 2.7 MB). In the fall of that year, a Legacy Initiatives Advisory Council (LIAC) was selected to engage the Chinese-Canadian community and other key stakeholders and then advise government on the successful implementation of the projects.
The legacy projects embody government’s pledge to honour the apology for historical wrongs committed against British Columbia’s Chinese-Canadian community by past provincial government legislation and policy. They are the result and inspiration of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Consultation Process and will ensure that historical wrongs are acknowledged and remain part of our collective history.
The projects are diverse, broad in scope and will provide a meaningful legacy for all British Columbians. They are well advised and have won the support of community leaders. Government is using the funding to ensure the projects endure over time and are consistent with the following legacy themes:
