B.C. Innovation Commissioner

The purpose of the Innovation Commissioner (IC) role is to serve as B.C.’s champion for technology and innovation. They facilitate partnerships and promote innovation across the province. The IC helps companies grow in all regions and sectors.

The Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation (JEDI) oversees the role. The IC role works with the Executive Team of JEDI and other relevant ministries, as well as with the CEO and Board Chair of Innovate BC.

B.C. Innovation Commissioner’s focus

The most recent IC, Dr. Gerri Sinclair (July 17, 2020 to April 1, 2024) focused on implementing innovation strategies and programs guided by the initial work of the first IC and the priorities of government during the appointment, including:

• Recommendations in the StrongerBC Economic Plan
• COVID-19 recovery efforts
• The Integrated Marketplace

The IC championed innovation through speaking engagements and participation in public events and discourse, and worked to increase innovation investments from industry, government and other organizations.

The first provincial IC, Alan Winter (February 5, 2018 to February 4, 2020) focused on discovery based on literature, research and engagement and presented research findings for the province.
