B.C. has a vibrant research sector that consists of research organizations and support mechanisms. Research organizations conduct research while support mechanisms provide assistance and/or distribute funding.

This page provides examples of research organizations and support mechanisms in the province.

Research organizations 

FPInnovations 

FPInnovations is a Canada-wide research and development organization. It creates solutions to support the Canadian forest sector’s global competitiveness.  

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC)

ONC is an initiative of the University of Victoria. It observes the west and east coasts of Canada and the Arctic. It collects long-term data across disciplines to provide well-rounded information. 

Quantum Algorithms Institute (QAI)

The QAI aims to help secure B.C.’s position as a global leader in the application of quantum computing technology to real-world problems.

TRIUMF

TRIUMF is Canada's particle accelerator centre supporting seven universities. It pushes boundaries in nuclear and particle physics research to advance:

  • Science
  • Medicine
  • Business

Support mechanisms

B.C. Knowledge Development Fund (BCKDF)

The BCKDF is the B.C. government’s major research infrastructure funding program. Project costs are shared between BCKDF and the Canada Foundation for Innovation

BCNET

BCNET provides a high-speed private network for researchers. The network helps share information around the world. 

Genome BC

Genome BC invests in and manages genomics and proteomics research projects. It aims to establish B.C. as a leader in genomic research. It supports commercialization of research. Genome BC works with:

  • Government 
  • Universities
  • Industry

Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems (Mitacs)

Mitacs supports research and development in Canada and abroad. It connects industry with academia. Mitacs supports the sector through internships.

Michael Smith Health Research BC (MSHRBC)

MSHRBC supports B.C.’s health and life sciences sectors. It helps:

  • Grow B.C. health research talent
  • Co-fund researchers
  • Advance the use of health research to improve health

Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS)

PICS supports collaborative engagement to develop climate solutions. Its goal is to produce research used by decision-makers to develop actions for climate mitigation and adaptation.
