Dental health
Dental health has a significant impact on the general health and well-being of children. Poor oral health impacts social function and can lead to limitations in communication and social interactions.
Public health staff offer dental education and support for families of children aged 0 to 5 years. They also provide dental screenings and childhood interventions such as fluoride varnish application.

Hearing health
The critical period for a child's language development is during the first two years. Almost all newborns in B.C. have their hearing tested. If you’re concerned that your baby may have a hearing problem, you can have a follow-up hearing assessments.
Vision health
Healthy vision is important for a child's learning. Each B.C. health authority provides vision screening for children in Kindergarten and, if necessary, referrals to vision specialists for more testing and follow up.

Newborn screening
Newborn babies born in B.C. are screened for the early detection and treatment of 22 disorders. Early diagnosis may prevent or greatly reduce the health concerns associated with these disorders.
