The Province aims to work collaboratively with communities in B.C. on clean energy solutions to achieve the emission reduction targets laid out in the CleanBC plan.
B.C. has potential to grow its renewable energy sector beyond clean hydroelectricity and into other established and emerging areas - using biogas from landfills, capturing waste heat from sewage or buildings, or using solar, wind or small-scale hydro.
Community-based renewable energy projects are necessary to meet our province’s future energy needs and reduce GHG emissions. They also to generate local new jobs and economic development, reduce waste and costs, and create a cleaner environment.
Clean energy solutions are being developed in communities across the province from remote villages to mid-sized rural towns to large cities. The Province is working towards reducing emissions in the built environment through energy efficiency and clean energy generation projects that can bring considerable benefits to British Columbians including:
In partnership with local governments and Indigenous communities, the Province supports clean energy projects such as district energy systems; energy efficient retrofits of homes and community-owned buildings like recreation centres; and clean energy generation/energy storage systems for remote communities. Various provincial ministries support communities through the development of policy and programs to develop innovative energy solutions and create sustainable communities.
