An organization that markets diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, and their alternatives for use in an applicable purpose must comply with the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS). An organization markets fuel if they are responsible for it under the Low Carbon Fuels Act.
Beginning on January 1, 2024, applicable purposes include transportation and the following prescribed purposes:
For more information, see:
The LCFS implements two main targets to reduce B.C.'s reliance on non-renewable fuels, reduce the environmental impact of fuels, and spur growth in the clean fuels industry.
These targets extend to 2030 and beyond.
The LCFS requires those who market fossil-derived fuels to supply biomass-derived renewable fuels that meet the following industry standards in their fuel pool each year:
The LCFS requires those who market fossil-derived fuels and their alternatives to comply with increasingly stringent carbon intensity reduction targets each year.
The baseline carbon intensities for fuels are:
Effective January 1, 2024, the reductions schedule is as follows:

Organizations may apply for exemption from the renewable and low carbon fuel targets if their annual supply is below the exemption limit.
Visit Exemption for more information regarding the exemption limit.
Each compliance period is the calendar year from January 1 to December 31. Compliance reports are due on March 31 following each compliance period.
Reporting documents for the 2023 Compliance Period are due on March 31, 2024.
For more information, see:
Compliance and Exclusion Reporting are managed through the Transportation Fuels Reporting System.
Labelling requirements are in place to inform consumers where blend levels may exceed engine manufacturer’s recommended levels. See RLCF-004: Labelling Requirements for more information.
