Weevils

Last updated on January 30, 2025

Weevils are a large group of insects related to beetles that are distinguished by their long noses.

Terminal weevils are found on pine and spruce throughout most regions in British Columbia. They can harm tree volume and wood quality by causing stem deformation and height loss. Root collar weevils are typically pests of young plantations and can cause mortality by feeding on a tree's root collar.

White pine or spruce weevil

Adult white pine weevils are brown with white spots; they occur in spruce and pine ecosystems throughout Canada. A white pine weevil (or spruce leader weevil) infestation damages the tree leader (new growth in the last two years) which can result in a forked or dwarfed tree form, growth losses, a reduction in wood quality, a decrease in lumber recovery, and potentially tree death. Lodgepole pine terminal weevil

The lodgepole terminal weevil lays its eggs in the newly expanding terminal shoot. The lodgepole terminal weevil develops from egg to larva the first summer and from larva to adult the second summer, overwintering in the first year as a larva in the terminal shoot. Damage can include forked trees and reduced lumber values. Learn more about the lodgepole pine terminal weevil.

Poplar and willow borer

Introduced to North America from Europe, poplar and willow borer infestations in British Columbia are most common on Vancouver Island and in southern interior valleys. Learn more about the poplar and willow borer.

Warren root collar weevil

Warren root collar weevils are found in coniferous forest across Canada. The larval stage of the weevil's lifecycle causes the most damage as the larvae feed on below ground galleries under the root collar bark. If a gallery encircling the entire tree can cause tree mortality which is most common in young tree grown in plantations. Learn more about the warren root collar weevil.

Yosemite bark weevil

Yosemite bark weevils bore under the bark in the bole, root collar, and large roots of stressed or dying trees. They are commonly found in lodgepole pine affected by serious damaging agents, such as Comandra blister rust. Learn more about the Yosemite bark beetle.
