Adaptive physiology in tree breeding

The adaptive physiology research program helps forest geneticists and forest nurseries produce stress-resistant trees with high growth potential by testing genetic variation in:

  • Frost hardiness
  • Photosynthetic potential
  • Phenology (seasonal changes)
  • Heat tolerance
  • Drought tolerance
  • Pathogen tolerance
  • Tolerance to other stresses

The forest genetics research team investigates treatments that can increase stress tolerance of seedlings in the nursery and after planting. The goal of the program is to help maximize field performance of planted seedlings while minimizing the risk of maladaptation to current and future conditions under climate change.
