The Suquash Coalfield

This small deposit, which was the first deposit to be developed on the Vancouver Island, underlies an area of about 105 square kilometres on the northeastern part of the island. A small mine operated from 1849 to 1851 and produced 23,000 tonnes of high-volatile C to B bituminous coal from Upper Cretaceous rocks. The coal generally has high ash contents and there has been little activity on the property in recent decades.
