Across the central part of the Province, several sedimentary basins — such as the Bowser, Whitehorse and Nechako — are identified as having significant petroleum and natural gas resource potential. However, their hydrocarbon potential has been difficult to quantify due to their high degree of structural disruption, relative isolation, and limited subsurface geological and geophysical information.
The Geological Survey of Canada has been conducting ongoing resource-assessment studies. This effort, in tandem with ministry exploration geological studies, will attempt to compile new data and identify new exploration opportunities in these areas. Coalbed gas is also a significant potential resource (est. 9 Tcf) and a call for postings of petroleum and natural gas rights has been issued for the Tuya, Klappan/Groundhog and Telkwa coalfields.
