Fossils tell a million stories. British Columbia has amazing fossils, the evidence of past life forms. Fossils are scientifically valuable and have a natural heritage value as a record of Earth’s biodiversity. These values, and fossils’ value to education, are showcased in the BC Fossils Educational Kit. The study of fossils, called paleontology, seeks to understand the natural world, and changes through deep geological time. This teaching kit is intended to help spark that fascination about the past.
Paleontology is not a narrow field – it bridges STEM (STEAM) fields – science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Fossils provide a tangible and creative way to make interdisciplinary connections. Studying fossils is relevant to topics of broader societal interest such as climate change, biodiversity, extinction, and evolution.
The educational materials and activities available are for Grades K to 8 but could be extended to high school level. They are linked with a list of B.C.’s curriculum content and competencies.
