Indigenous People and Communities
Last updated on June 3, 2021The Indigenous people of Canada includes First Nations, Métis and Inuit people. Indigenous people have distinct cultures, languages and spiritual beliefs. Canada has over 600 Indigenous communities or bands. B.C. has the highest number, at 204 recognized bands.
The terms Aboriginal and Indian are no longer considered appropriate when referring to Indigenous peoples in Canada. As the terms are still contained within certain laws and organization names, you may see them used that way.
