Who Can Apply to Adopt in B.C.?

Our adoptive parents come from diverse backgrounds, with strong a commitment to make a difference in a young person's life. You don't need to be the perfect parent to adopt and marital status and sexual orientation don't matter. 

• B.C. resident (for a minimum of 6 months)
• 19 years of age or older
• Any one adult or two adults jointly may apply

Every effort is made to find an adoptive family who best meets the specific needs of a child and can provide them with a permanent secure and loving home.

Adoption Practice Standards, Policy and Procedures:

Adoption Practice Standards (PDF) provide direction to workers providing direct placement, relative adoption, voluntary relinquishment, interprovincial, and intercountry adoption services delegated by the Director of Adoption under section 77 of the Adoption Act. Adoption Practice Standards do not apply to adoption services for children in care (for direction in those situations see Adoption Policy and Procedures).  

Adoption Policy and Procedures (PDF) provide direction to workers providing adoption services delegated by the Director of Adoption under section 77 of the Adoption Act or by the Director of Child Welfare under section 92 of the Child, Family and Community Service Act (CFCSA). Adoption Policies and Procedures apply to apply to children in care under a continuing custody order under the CFCSA or under the Infants Act, where the permanency plan is adoption.
