The BC Coroners Service has revised its disclosure policy to require a written request for the request and release of personal information regarding decedents.

All requests for information when the coroner is signing the Medical Certificate of Death must be made in writing to BCCSFuneralhome@gov.bc.ca before any personal information can be shared. To make the process easier, please send a pending registration with the following information:

  • Name of the deceased
  • Date of birth
  • Date of death (exact or estimated)
  • Township/city of death (if known)
  • Name of the informant and their relationship to the deceased

The requested personal information for the decedent will be included in the Electronic Medical Certificate of Death (EMCOD) that will be available upon release. Please allow 48 hours before following up on requests.

The following information can be shared over the phone, without a written request:

  • BC Coroners Service investigation number
  • Name of the physician/nurse practitioner signing the Physician’s Medical Certificate of Death
  • Physical location of the decedent

Thank you for your continued understanding as we take steps to balance the needs of our partners with our commitment to respect the privacy of the decedents and families we serve.
