Driving suspensions and prohibitions

Alcohol- and drug-affected driving are leading causes of death on the roads. Police are trained to recognize the effects of alcohol and drugs on drivers. Under the Motor Vehicle Act, they can remove drivers from the road by issuing driving prohibitions and licence suspensions.

Driving while prohibited

You must not drive while your licence is prohibited. Driving while prohibited is illegal. It carries a minimum fine of $500 for a first offence, a 12-month prohibition and possible imprisonment. Imprisonment is mandatory for a second offence.
