BC Public Service laboratory/health sciences officers are responsible for the performance of analytical, experimental, investigative and regulatory duties in the health sciences. Responsibilities may also include the preparation, identification, inspection and measurement of biological, chemical and physical substances and materials.

Positions may also be gather data or collect specimens.

Responsibilities include:

  • Analysis, experimentation, interpretation, classification and measurement of the chemical, physical or biological composition and characteristics of plant, animal or food products
  • Conducting analytical, experimental, investigative and therapeutic duties, and tests in support of the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of human ailments, in hospitals, other patient care establishments and field locations
  • Conducting analytical, experimental or investigative duties involving the planning of the approach, the selection and publication of established methods and techniques or the quantitative or qualitative analysis of physical, chemical or biological substances
  • Providing technical advisory services to professional staff in related fields
  • The operation and calibration of laboratory, research and medical equipment including the development of methodology
  • The evaluation of materials, products and substances such as air, water and pesticides against physical, chemical, biochemical or biological standards
  • The inspection for conformity to prescribed specification of related equipment or supplies purchased, manufactured or prepared for government and industry
  • Theoretical or technical planning, development and establishment of laboratory procedures and practices
  • The theoretical or technical interpretation or reporting of the results of laboratory tests, procedures or analyses beyond that normally associated with standardized or established methodology
  • The conduct of research aimed at the discovery and interpretation of new facts or applications in the relevant discipline
  • the gathering of data and resulting analysis, evaluation and interpretation of laboratory/medical tests or analyses, and the writing of reports and recommendations related to the above duties
  • Writing standards, specifications, procedures or manuals related to the above duties
  • Planning, development and training
  • Supervising other staff

Note: Per the 19th Main Public Service Agreement, the employer and the BCGEU have jointly agreed that, effective April 1, 2022, the point band range for Grid 13 will be amalgamated with the point band range for Grid 15.

As a result of this decision, Grid 13 will no longer be used and all employees who are currently at the Grid 13 level will be moved over to their same classification at the Grid 15 level.
