The B.C. Public Service is divided into ministries. Each ministry is responsible for a specific area of public policy, government function or service delivery.
There are many independent or partially independent agencies, boards and commissions that are essential to effectively governing the province. Agencies include authorities, boards, commissions, corporations and councils. A public agency also includes any bodies established by the government on an interim basis to perform arbitration, regulation or similar functions.
Crown corporations are owned by the government, but operate at arm’s length from the public service and elected officials.
Independent boards, commissions and tribunals are established by the government to perform arbitration, regulation or similar functions. The provincial government appoints at least one representative to these agencies.
Professional regulatory authorities are government agencies or public organizations with authority delegated by law from the government. They provide oversight and certification to specified regulated occupations in B.C.
