Farm building engineering

Whereas optimal building layout maximizes the overall efficiency of a farm operation, engineering design and good construction practices ensures that structures are safe, durable and long-lasting.

Engineering input prior to construction recognizes the importance snow, rain, wind, soil and other loads factor into good design. The National Farm Building Code of Canada specifies a variety of additional loads that a designer should be aware of when preparing drawings and outlining standards and specifications. Farm buildings are particularly vulnerable to wind and snow loads because their very nature includes wide open areas and high clearances. Adequate bracing is a critical component of wall and roof systems. Proper engineering is therefore critical to prevent serious structural failures and possible loss of human and animal life.
