Sunshine Coast Operating Area: Community engagement

Last updated on March 5, 2025

The Sunshine Coast Natural Resource District occupies the south coast of British Columbia about 100 km north of Vancouver from Gibsons to Bute Inlet and covers roughly 1,547,099 hectares of land. BCTS is committed to sustainable forest management and building strong relationships with communities through engagement and consultation.

Mt. Elphinstone

The Mt. Elphinstone area is located adjacent to the communities of Gibsons and Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast of B.C. In recognition of population growth in adjacent communities and associated water management concerns, BCTS voluntarily commissioned a water study of the relevant operating area to ensure sustainable forest management.

Roberts Creek and Stephens Creek

The assessment area covers the catchment of two streams, Roberts Creek and Stephens Creek. Within Roberts Creek there are two main tributary basins, Clack Creek, and the Gough Creek sub-basin nested within, and East Roberts Creek. The BCTS Forest Stewardship Plan (FSP #672) does not require a watershed assessment for this area, but BCTS recognizes that there is a need for such an assessment given the multiple downstream values that are present.

The scope of the assessment is intended to provide BCTS with watershed-level guidance on how to proceed with forest development planning to minimize hydrogeomorphic risks.
