Coal Report Submission Information

Last updated on December 2, 2020

The Coal Act requires that all coal licensees and lessees submit information and data (a coal assessment report) pertaining to coal exploration and development activities on coal licenses and leases.

A coal licence is valid for a term of one year from the data of it's issue. Coal assessment reports are due before the license expires, and must accompany the application for license extension, along with the prescribed rent. On freehold coal lands, coal assessment reports are due on or before March 31 in each year.

The coal assessment report must clearly document the specific type, amount, date, and location of all original exploration and development conducted on coal exploration lands. The report must include the results in the form of text, maps, diagrams, logs, cross-sections, tables, and spreadsheets necessary to describe, illustrate, explain, and interpret the exploration and development. Refer to Section 3 of the Coal Act Regulation for more information. All coal assessment reports must include the Coal Title Page and Summary Form.  For convenience, a coal assessment report checklist is provided to guide authors in preparing reports.
