Verdict

Last updated on August 23, 2022

The foreperson will notify the sheriff when the jury has reached a decision or verdict. The rest of the court participants will return to the courtroom, then the jury will be asked to return. The judge will ask the foreperson if they have come to a decision and to state that decision to the court.

After the verdict is delivered, court may be adjourned to allow counsel time to decide how to proceed with sentencing positions. Once the judge is satisfied that no further clarifications are needed regarding the verdict, the judge will address the jury, then dismiss them from jury duty.

The sheriff will accompany the jurors back to the jury room. Jury members will collect personal belongings and may ask the sheriff final questions such as the need for transportation from the courthouse or how to claim incurred expenses.

At the conclusion of the trial, jurors are encouraged to review information regarding self-care and the Jury Support Program.

In the days and weeks following conclusion of the case, jurors are welcome to contact the local sheriff office with questions.
