Indigenous Corrections Programs

Many people in the federal and provincial corrections systems are Indigenous. To address this, federal and provincial corrections agencies work with Indigenous people, governments and organizations to develop facilities, services and programs that respond to Indigenous offenders’ needs.

They include:

• Developing plans for residential facilities that both meet Indigenous people’s cultural needs and protect society
• Using holistic and restorative justice approaches, based on traditional Indigenous justice concepts and practices.

B.C. Corrections provides programs to support and enhance relationships with Indigenous people and their communities.  There are dedicated correctional staff who are assigned to:

• Increase staff’s knowledge and sensitivity of Indigenous people’s experience with the criminal justice system
• Develop plans for residential facilities that meet cultural needs and protect society
• Deliver Indigenous programming in the community and provincial correctional centres
• Support community initiatives for Indigenous people

Correctional Service Canada, Indigenous corrections also has programs to assist with the needs of Indigenous people and help ensure safe and healthy Indigenous communities.
