Who needs a criminal record check
People 12 years or older, who spend time with children or vulnerable adults, must be screened.
This includes:
- Employees
- Volunteers
- Contractors and subcontractors
- Teachers
- Post-secondary students on a practicum
- Registered health professionals and social workers
Care facilities, childcare facilities and daycares must also screen people 12 or older who spend time at the facility (for example, family members, tenants or exchange students).
When to do a criminal record check
If someone needs a criminal record check, they must get one:
- Before they work, volunteer, spend time at the facility or become licensed
- Every 5 years
- If they have a new charge or conviction (they can't work with children under 19 or vulnerable adults until they submit a new criminal record check)
