The veterans supplement allows former officers or non-commissioned members of the Canadian Armed Forces who have a low income to supplement their home owner grant.
The veterans supplement is the difference between the regular home owner grant and the higher amount available for seniors, surviving spouses of veterans who received a War Veterans Allowance and people with disabilities.
The veterans supplements is administered and dispersed by the Property Taxation Branch of the Ministry of Finance.
You must apply separately for the regular home owner grant and the veterans supplement. If you apply for the veterans supplement with the Province and your principal residence is eligible to receive the full additional home owner grant, the veterans supplement application will be denied.
Find out:
To qualify for the veterans supplement you must:
If you have an adjusted net income between $30,000 and $32,000, you may receive half the supplement amount.
If you’re the spouse or relative of a deceased owner who would have qualified, you may be eligible for the supplement in the year of their death as long as you lived with them at the time of death and continue to live in the home.
Most veterans who qualify and apply for the supplement receive a cheque for $275. However, the amount of the supplement depends on your income and the assessed value of your home. The amount will not exceed what you would have received as a home owner grant if your home was assessed below the threshold.
You must apply for the home owner grant and the veterans supplement separately.
To apply for the veterans supplement complete the Home Owner Grant Veterans Supplement Application (FIN 79) (PDF, 210KB) and submit it to us. Ensure you also submit a copy of your discharge letter if this is your first time applying for the supplement for veterans under 65.
We must receive your veterans supplement application by December 31 of the current tax year.
If you’re deferring your property taxes, still apply for a home owner grant, if eligible, and also apply for the veterans supplement.
The veterans supplement may be available retroactively if you were eligible last year and didn’t apply.
You can apply for a retroactive supplement for only the previous tax year.
To apply for last year’s veterans supplement, complete and submit the Home Owner Grant Veterans Supplement Application (FIN 79) (PDF, 210KB).
We must receive your retroactive veterans supplement application by December 31 of the current tax year.
