Construction on terminal improvements to the Kootenay Bay Terminal (east shore) will begin in spring 2021, with completion expected by the end of 2021. Marwest Industries Ltd. of Castlegar, B.C., was awarded the contract for upgrades to Kootenay Lake Ferry terminals.

Ferry users boarding at Kootenay Bay will soon be able to enjoy the following improvements:
- Improvements to the existing washroom facility including accessibility and aesthetics upgrades
- Sheltered waiting area adjacent to the boarding ramp for walk‐on users
- New terminal attendant station to provide ferry users with timely information and direction
- Greenspace improvements
- Electric vehicle charging stations
- Improvements to the terminal parking, including accessible parking
- Lighting at the sheltered waiting area and north west corner of the terminal
- Improved signage for the runaway lane to avoid conflicts with ferry traffic
- Flashing warning lights on the highway approach before the Riondell turn‐off to warn drivers of potential congestion ahead
