Vaping-Associated Lung Illness (VALI) is an acute respiratory illness characterized by lung damage following personal use of certain vaping products. VALI is not an infectious disease. VALI is a serious medical condition that may require hospitalization and may sometimes require admission to an intensive care unit and respiratory support.
The Public Health Agency of Canada's outbreak investigation did not identify a common cause of VALI in Canada. However, evidence from the US suggests a link to unregulated tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-containing vaping products that contained additives, such as Vitamin E acetate.
British Columbia’s Provincial Health Officer issued a notice.
Health Canada reminds Canadians that the purchase of vaping products outside the legal market are not subject to any controls or oversight and may pose additional risks to health and safety.
