Local Government Climate Action Program

The Local Government Climate Action Program (LGCAP) provides local governments and Modern Treaty Nations with predictable and stable funding.

This funding supports timely local climate action that reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, prepares communities for the impacts of a changing climate and creates new opportunities for people in the clean economy.

LGCAP supports local climate action to help B.C.:

As part of the program, funding recipients will be required to report on their actions.

This program:

  • Provides flexible, long-term and efficiently disbursed funding that meets urban and rural needs
  • Enables community-specific action to reduce GHG emissions and increase climate resilience
  • Facilitates robust reporting to track results and help improve the program over time
  • Mobilizes knowledge sharing among local governments and Modern Treaty Nations to promote innovative climate action across the province

Important dates

March 2024 – Funds disbursed through Ministry of Municipal Affairs 

  • Funds for LGCAP years 2024-2026 were disbursed in an upfront lump sum payment to local governments and Modern Treaty Nations - through the Province's existing Corporate Accounting System

May 1 to July 31 – Reporting period

  • During the reporting period, participants must complete and submit the required online survey and attestation form 

By September 30 – Survey information and attestation form posted publicly

  • Each local government must publicly post the program survey and attestation form

Support for Modern Treaty Nations

Modern Treaty Nations are eligible for the LGCAP.

The Province also supports other Indigenous communities outside of Modern Treaty Nations. View other Indigenous communities' climate action funding programs.
