Health and safety are key components of an independent and active lifestyle for seniors. Below you'll find information and resources specifically selected to help older people stay as healthy as possible for as long as possible.

Health Care Programs and Services

The Ministry of Health, the six B.C. health authorities and a host of other partner organizations work together to deliver health care programs and services across B.C. Learn more about some services and programs that are particularly important to the health and well-being of seniors.

Disease and Injury: Care and Prevention

Although an active, healthy lifestyle can slow the aging process, there is no denying that as we get older we often face a variety of health issues and concerns. In this section, you'll find information about what you can do to prevent and care for illnesses and injuries you might experience as you age.

Protection from Elder Abuse and Neglect

Without protection, some older people can be vulnerable to abuse and neglect. The B.C. government provides a number of programs and services to prevent elder abuse and neglect and to help any seniors who may suffer from abuse and neglect.

Safety at Home

One of the best ways to maintain your independence and active lifestyle is to make sure your home is a safe place for you and your family and friends. Find out what you can do to make your space a safe place.

Active Aging

An active, engaged lifestyle that includes healthy eating and physical, mental, and social activity lays the foundation for a healthy life as a senior. Check out this section for tips, inspiration, and a celebration of active seniors in B.C.

Medication Safety

As we age, we often need to take multiple medications to maintain our health and manage our health conditions. This section gives you info, tips, and links that will make it easier to keep track of your medication, take it safely, and avoid mix-ups and medication conflicts.

Advance Care Planning

As we age, it is critical that we consider and document our wishes concerning health care procedures and end-of-life care. Making an advance care plan provides our families and health care providers with instructions, should we ever be unable to make health care decisions ourselves.

Emergency and Disaster Preparedness

All residents in B.C. should make preparations for their safety in the event of a large emergency or natural disaster. This is especially important for seniors who may be less able to respond quickly and vigorously to an earthquake, flood, or other emergency.

Emergency

In a medical emergency, dial 9-1-1, if it’s available in your community, or call the emergency number listed in the front of your phone book.
