OneHealthID Service

Last updated on April 15, 2024

A suite of identity products and services for health care providers in BC.

The service enables simple, secure identity management, simplified user sign on processes, streamlined registration and enrolment, and integrated security.

Why was the OneHealthID Service created?

To address the identity and access management challenges faced by health care providers in BC when they attempt to access health information. This includes, but is not limited to, challenges such as:

  • Too many userIDs and passwords
  • Many different processes and tools to access systems
  • Repeated requests for the same information

What is the suite of identity services comprising the OneHealthID Service?

The services comprising the OneHealthID Service are:

  • Enrolment
  • Access Management
  • Identity Governance and Administration (coming soon)
  • Audit and Log
  • Platform Service Team

What are the key benefits of the OneHealthID Service?

  • One time. Provide identity information once – top up when needed
  • Reusable. Use the same identity for multiple systems, across orgs
  • Reduce. Rationalize number of accounts needed (many->few->one)

What is the key product of the OneHealthID Service?

The BCProvider access credential is the key product. It is a single, verified, everyday-use credential to access a growing number of provincial health applications (backed by BC Services Card) and is aligned to policy.

The BCProvider credential is created during the enrolment process https://healthprovideridentityportal.gov.bc.ca/auth/login

BC Services Card (BCSC), Provider Location Registry (PLR), BCProvider – how do they work together?

The BCSC is used to access services provided by the Gov’t of BC.
The PLR is a source of health care provider information such as status, name, and demographic information.
The BCProvider is an access credential used by health care providers to access health information in BC.

The BCSC and PLR are distinct from, but are leveraged by, the OneHealthID service.

During the enrolment process, the OneHealthID service

  • uses the verified digital identity created by the BCSC to prove who you are
  • (where applicable) queries the PLR to confirm that a health care provider is in good standing
  • creates a BCProvider account - a credential used to access health data (not another email account)

Two Factor Authentication (2FA), Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) – how does this apply the OneHealthID Service?

The BC Services Card (BCSC) employs an app on your phone (BC Service Card app) in which you provide and verify your ID. This app employs 2FA when you login.

The OneHealthID Service (BCProvider access credential) also uses 2FA. Upon initial release, the Microsoft Authenticator app is used for 2FA. Going forward, the approach for 2FA will be tailored for providers, employing methods which better align to the way they work.
