The Crown Contaminated Sites Program (CCSP) manages prioritized, high-risk contaminated sites on Crown land for which there is no existing responsible party. These are typically remote, unpermitted historic mine sites and make up a small fraction of the contaminated sites on Crown land.
Other provincial ministries and Crown corporations with responsibilities for permitting and management of land and resources on Crown land (e.g. forest tenures, land tenures, mining, transportation and infrastructure, real property, electricity, oil and gas) have oversight and management roles related to contaminated sites.
The CCSP uses a science-based approach for assessing human and environmental health risks to identify high risk sites and prioritize them for remediation. CCSP’s remediation activities are regulated under the Contaminated Sites Regulation for which the Environmental Emergencies and Land Remediation Branch has oversight.
The Environmental Emergencies and Land Remediation Branch at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy regulates contaminated sites throughout the province, including private lands and Provincial Crown lands.
