Your Safety

If you witness a crime ensure you and your loved ones are in no immediate danger. Then report the crime to the police. Your safety is your first priority.

This section guides you to services and resources available to help keep you, your loved ones and others safe. 

Support Available from Police

If at any time you are concerned about your or someone else's safety, call the police:

• For emergencies call 911
• For non-emergencies call your local police

Youth and Child Safety

You have a legal obligation to report situations where a child or youth (under 19) needs protection because they, for example, are being abused, neglected or sexually exploited. You must report the matter to the Ministry of Children and Family Development. For more information and to receive help making a report concerning a child or young person who needs protection, call the Helpline for Children.

Protection Orders

A protection order is a court order that says that someone (for example, the person who committed the crime) is not allowed to have any contact with someone else (for example, a witness or victim).

It is important that you make sure you and your loved ones are safe from harassment, intimidation or threats, especially if you are a witness. If you do not feel safe, tell the police. After that, you can apply to the court for a protection or no contact order. Call your local police to get information about how to keep safe.
