Summary: Brem River changes to season

Status: Proposed

Region: 2, Lower Mainland

Management unit (MU): 2-13

Regulation type: Season (No Fishing Variation Orders)

Species: Steelhead

Closing date: February 14, 2025

Decision statement: Pending

Current regulation:

  • No Fishing from the upstream edge of falls (situated approximately 1.5 km from the river’s mouth) to a point 100 m downstream
  • Artificial fly only upstream of 2nd set of falls (situated approximately 2.5 km upstream of Hillis Creek confluence)
  • Bait ban

Proposed regulation:

  • No Fishing from the upstream edge of falls (situated approximately 1.5 km from the river’s mouth) to a point 100 m downstream
  • No fishing from November 1 to June 30, upstream of 2nd set of falls (situated approximately 2.5 km upstream of Hillis Creek confluence)
  • Artificial fly only upstream of 2nd set of falls (situated approximately 2.5 km upstream of Hillis Creek confluence)
  • Bait ban

Rationale:

The proposed closure is in alignment with summer-run steelhead regulations on Vancouver Island to reduce angling-related impacts due to the long freshwater adult residence time.
