The Wildlife Accident Reporting System (WARS) is a comprehensive program that began in 1978 to help mitigate wildlife-vehicle crashes on B.C.'s network of highways and roads. Hundreds of ministry employees and contractors are actively involved in monitoring wildlife incidents and developing solutions.

Highway maintenance contractors identify and record the species and location of each animal killed on B.C.'s highways. This helps to identify where mitigation efforts are most needed.
How the Public Can Report an Accident Involving Wildlife
If you are involved in an accident with an animal or see a dead animal in the road, please call the RCMP, local police and/or highway maintenance contractor in the area. We need to remove the carcass from the traffic lanes before it causes an accident. The maintenance contractor can then add the data to the WARS system.
- Pay attention and drive at the posted speed limit
- Drive at reduced speeds from dusk to dawn when animals are most active
- Keep windshields clean as animals are not always easy to spot
- Have good tires/brakes for safe stopping
